Garden Philosophy
Emily Post defined ‘graciousness’ as the ability to make other people feel welcome and comfortable in your world.
What better way to extend a warm welcome to guests or passersby than a lovely front entrance? What else is more comfortable than a relaxing evening in the back yard on a warm summer night surrounded by a thoughtfully designed and beautifully appointed garden?
The foundation of every design we have the pleasure to create is based on 5 key elements: cohesiveness, continuity, balance, craftsmanship and horticulture.
Cohesiveness
We believe that the hallmark of an effective landscape plan is cohesiveness. Whether our clients have a master plan installed all at once, or in sections as time or budget allows, the end result will be the same—a thoughtful, cohesive landscape. It’s very easy (and we’re also guilty of it) to go to a nursery and find a pretty plant and take it home! But what it eventually becomes is a hodge-podge of single pretty plants that don’t come together to create a pretty landscape. Having, and adhering to, a master plan is the key to an elegant frame for a home.
Continuity
One of our favorite design elements is the idea of continuity. There’s just something satisfying about walking through a garden where the same grouping of plants hops a path, or a bed line continues from one side of the sidewalk and picks back up on the other. We also repeat groupings of plants or colors or leaf shape, or plant sweeping swaths of plants to further the idea of consistency.
Balance
Both proportion and weight are important factors in good landscape design. We take into account the height and width of our homes and plan the bed shape and size accordingly. Proper proportion creates a pleasing sense of balance and order and is the foundation of a thoughtful design.
Craftsmanship
We’re positively obsessed with the details and beauty of nature. From leaf structure and color to the time of year each plant flowers, every plant in our landscape plans has a distinct purpose. We watch the way plants dance and sway in the wind and catch the rising or setting sun and draw them into the optimal places. Likewise, every plant is carefully planted with precision to the plan and attention to spacing. We strive to strike the balance between immediate gratification and growth maturity. We believe that true craftsmanship in born in the finest details.
Horticulture
Horticulture is defined as “the art or practice of garden cultivation and management.” We draw from our backgrounds of the Texas Master Gardener program and over 15 years of experience in landscape architecture to create horticulturally sound landscapes. From plant selection to placement, our goal is to assure beautiful outdoor spaces for many years to come.
It is our adherence to these core values and foundations that assures a beautiful and thriving investment into your home!
